To Science Fiction, or to Sci-Fi: That is the question...

A factoid recently crossed my desk: Science Fiction movies are the biggest sellers at the box office in North America. Not too surprising, I suppose. But why does it warrant a blog entry?

Well...

This factoid got us thinking, and the thought spanned into conversations, and the conversations grew into discussions, which in turn bloomed into epics of their own conversational right. And all this because none of us had ever really contemplated the scope of the genre.

So, we invite you to follow as we explore the roots, trends and future of Science Fiction on Film. This 8 part series will explore some of the major moments and themes seen throughout the genre, and hopefully help you, our customers, find new and thought-provoking territory of your own to explore in this much loved and often misunderstood realm.

The fun starts next week (the week of September 3, 2006). Until then here's a little something to wet your whistle...

I have been a soreheaded occupant of a file drawer labeled 'Science Fiction'... and I would like out, particularly since so many serious critics regularly mistake the drawer for a urinal. Kurt Vonnegut, Jr (American Novelist and Satirist)

We'd love to hear your thoughts on this one, so feel free to comment!
